ROBERT NESTA MARLEY'S INFLUENCE ON SOCIETY
Bob Marley was born in 1945 in a small rural area Nine mile in Jamaica. His influence upon various population remains significant irrespective of color, race or creed, His unifying and revolutionary voice challenged racism and colonialism like in his songs ONE DROP, AFRICA UNITE, SMALL AXE AND RAT RACE, AND OTHERS.
Between 1974 and 1980 gangs associated with the countries two political parties fighting for supremacy resulting in death, injury, and displacement of thousands of people. His music didn't exactly soothe tension single handedly, but Marley's ONE LOVE PEACE CONCERT IN KINGSTONE JAMAICA, in 1978 was a defining moment in the conflict. The concert brought 16 reggae most popular musicians for a celebration of peace.
His most ironic moment came during his performance of his song "jamming" Marley brought two rival politicians on stage and raised their hands in a sign of unity. He also performed at Zimbabwe's independence day.
He spread love and compassion for the economically disadvantaged and also gave a voice to the unheard. He was awarded by United Nations A PEACE MEDAL. He also served as international cultural ambassador of the Rastafarian religion.
He died in 1981 of melanoma leaving behind a legacy of a spiritual leader and a music pioneer, his music continues to touch hearts of people all over the globe! He was the first popular musician from a developing country to hit a global stage.
Bob Marley music isn't all about chill vibes and jamming out at reggae concerts. His songs were infused with peace and love inspired by the desire to be an advocate for cultural understanding and pollical unity .
He was acquainted with Jamaica's racial and political struggles and tried to use music to heal the beleaguered island's wounds.
